Opportunity for a postdoctoral (preferred) or PhD researcher in Sport Management (f/m/d) at KU Leuven (Belgium)

The successful candidate will closely collaborate with Prof. Dr. Thomas Könecke in the domain of sport management and will be an integral part of an international network of partners from academia and organizational practice. Depending on the candidate’s specific interests and previous experience, she/he will primarily work on (sport) governance and regulation, (sport) organizations and/or (sport) events with a specific focus on (environmental) sustainability, ethics and integrity, entrepreneurship, branding, finance and/or related topics.

The successful candidate can become a member of KU Leuven’s newly founded interdisciplinary Centre for Ethics, Regulation and Integrity in Sport (iCERIS) that will officially be launched in November. She/He will also have the opportunity to contribute to the Research Group Management and Entrepreneurship in Media and Sport (MEMaS) with RheinMain University of Applied Sciences (Germany) that is currently set up. She/He will be based at the FaBeR campus in Leuven that is a very attractive and green working environment in a nice university town (for more information check https://gbiomed.kuleuven.be/movementsciences).

Responsibilities

Publishing in international journals (in English), planning and conducting quantitative and qualitative scientific projects and data collections of national and international scope, working with (large) data sets, presentations at (international) conferences as well as the supervision of Master theses and a (very) limited amount of teaching support will be the core tasks of the appointee.

For postdoctoral researchers, active participation in the acquisition of funding and the supervision of PhD students can also be relevant tasks.

Profile

  • You hold a PhD (postdocs) or a Master’s degree (PhD students) in at least one of the following disciplines: Sport or Business Management, Economics, Sport or Movement Sciences, Psychology, Social Sciences or another discipline closely related to the field of sport management.
  • You have a strong interest in academic research, in particular related to (sport) governance and regulation, (sport) organizations and (sport) events with a specific focus on (environmental) sustainability, ethics and integrity, entrepreneurship, branding, finance and/or related topics.
  • You have achieved excellent academic results and should possess experience and advanced skills in statistical analyses.
  • You are fluent in English (both orally and in writing) as it is the standard working language. A profound knowledge of other languages is welcome but not required.
  • You have comprehensive research and project management experience (required for postdoctoral applicants and an advantage for PhD researchers).
  • You take initiative, work independently and have good time management skills. Moreover, you are inquisitive, cooperative and like to take responsibility.

 Offer

For postdoctoral candidates: You will receive a postdoctoral grant (100% appointment) under the scheme “International Postdoc Mobility”. The appointment can start very shortly and will ideally start in or before January 2022. It will initially be limited for one year. Afterwards, it will at least be prolonged until September 30, 2023, possibly longer.

For PhD researchers: You will be employed as part-time scientific staff (50% appointment under salary scale “barema 43”). The appointment can start very shortly and will ideally start in or before January 2022. It will initially be limited for one year. Afterwards, it will at least be prolonged until September 30, 2023, possibly longer.

On appointment, you and Prof. Dr. Thomas Könecke will agree on a work and development plan that successively will be updated during the appointment. It will comprise a strategy to further your career and should be the basis for a long-standing cooperation with the network of which you will become a part. The plan will also foresee opportunities for stays at other institutions and will successively identify professional perspectives within and outside of KU Leuven for the time after September 2023.
